According to Wikipedia, Catchment area is the area and population from which a city or individual service attracts visitors or customers. For better understanding, School catchment areas are the states which universities/polytechnics favor their indigene mostly in terms of admission.
How are students from a catchment area favored?
Most schools will reduce the cutoff mark for students from their catchment area, in a case like this, the merit cut-off mark will be higher than the catchment cutoff.
See image below for better understanding
In the case of a state university, candidates from the host state are easily given admission more than students from other states. For example, a student from Lagos state who scored 200 may be given admission into Lagos state university (LASU) while someone from Ogun state who scored 205 applying for the same course in the same university may not be admitted.
Note: Private universities do not have a catchment area (Private universities need lots of candidates so they don’t care which state you come from)
Hope you understand the explanation?
