Yaba College of Technology and Kaduna Polytechnic are in the news again. The Senate on Wednesday took another move to convert Yabatech and Kadpoly into Universities of Technology.
Two bills on the conversions of the two institutions passed second reading during Wednesdays plenary.
The bill on the conversion of Kaduna Polytechnic was sponsored by Senator Jibrin Barau (APC, Kanu) while the bill for the conversion of Yabatech was sponsored by Senator Gbenga Ashafa (APC, Lagos)
Reports has it that attempts were earlier made by the Goodluck Jonathan administration to convert the two institutions into Universities in 2010.
Earlier this year, it was reported that Yabatech and Kaduna Polytechnic had been converted into Universities but the Federal government quickly debunked the rumor.
Kaduna Polytechnic (Kadpoly) was established in 1956 as a technical institution and was upgraded to a Polytechnic in the year 1961.
Yaba College of Technology as the first tertiary institution in the country was established in the year 1947.
Is this the final move before this two schools would be converted into Universities? We definitely don’t know yet.
